NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – A Northampton man pleaded not guilty in connection with the murder of a woman found stabbed on Hatfield Street Sunday night.
According to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office Spokesperson Laurie Loisel, 24-year-old Devin R. Bryden is charged in connection with the murder of a 21-year-old woman and larceny of a motor vehicle. Police were called by a friend of the victim to an apartment on 11 Hatfield Street at around 6 p.m. who found the woman dead in the kitchen. Loisel told 22News that Bryden and the woman were roommates.
During the investigation, Bryden was found inside the victim’s car in a parking lot in Westfield. He was taken to Northampton for questioning. Loisel said in a statement, Bryden told police that he had stabbed the victim in order to take her car because he was going to become homeless soon.
Bryden is being held without bail after pleading not guilty in Northampton District Court Monday. The investigation is being conducted by the Northampton Police Department and the State Police Detective Unit attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
This is the first homicide in 2022 in Hampshire County.
