HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – Holyoke Community College students, staff, faculty, and friends marked Veterans Day on Wednesday by taking part in the 22 Pushup Challenge. Participants did 22 push-ups everyday for 22 days.
Members of HCC’s Military Club led the push-ups during the school’s annual Veterans Day celebration, which was held in the HCC Campus Center cafeteria from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Wednesday.
The 22 Pushup Challenge is a national initiative, started by a group called 22Kill, to bring attention and awareness to the issue of suicide among U.S. veterans.
According to the group, 22 veterans commit suicide everyday. The main idea is to raise awareness for veterans that have a hard time talking about their feelings.
“We wanted to bring light so people know what veterans go through and that sometimes its not as easy to hide feelings so we wanted to bring awareness to what goes on that sometimes gets hidden,” said HCC Military Club President Erin Hall.
At HCC, the challenge will be done collectively, led each day by students from the HCC Military Club in the HCC Courtyard.
This is the first time HCC is taking up the 22 Pushup Challenge. You can use the hashtag #22Pushups and post about the challenge is you have taken the pledge to do 22 push-ups a day for 22 days.
