Baystate Health seminar focuses on colon health

Health

The first of a 3-part series of health seminars was held Tuesday evening at the Baystate Health Education Center in Holyoke.

The theme of Tuesday night’s seminar was “Scope it out! Colon Health.” Two colorectal surgeons discussed how the colon works, screenings, signs of colon cancer, treatment, and prevention.

Colon cancer is one of the leading causes of deaths in the U.S., but one colorectal surgeon says it doesn’t have to be.

“It’s a particularly preventable cause of death,” Dr. Daniel Fish told 22News. “Colonoscopy helps us to identify cancers when they are in an early stage. When they’re treated in an early stage they’re very survivable.”

Baystate Health’s Senior Class offers free seminars which will continue with varying topics on April 2 and April 3.
