High demand causes shortage of shingles vaccine

The product is called Shingrix and it’s said to be more than 90 percent effective for men and women, 70 and older.

Shingles is a virus that causes painful nerve inflammation.

22News spoke to a pharmacist at the Big Y Pharmacy and Wellness Center on Cooley Street in Springfield about the shortage.

“We’ve been saying we have a waiting list going. And in our store about 100 people are on the waiting list,” Christi Masciadrelli told 22News. “Put yourself on the waiting list, we’re getting the vaccine in small supplies and we’re just taking down the waiting list,” Masciadrelli advised.

Because of the success that Shingrix has had preventing shingles, the company’s North Carolina plant hasn’t been able to keep up with the demand for the vaccine across the country.
