New way to compare healthcare costs could be coming soon

Massachusetts Residents may soon have an online tool to help them compare prices for medical procedures.

The Center for Information and Analysis built a website to help you choose the best health care coverage for your individual needs.

The CompareCare website allows patients to shop plans and procedures to find the best prices and quality offered across the state.

In a demonstration to the Joint Committee on Health Care Financing, CHIA Representative Ray Campbell on Tuesday showed how patients could use the website to find the best options for a planned medical procedure.

Representative Jeffery Roy told 22News, “If I’m looking at it and understanding it, it seems like this could be a game changer in the health insurance industry.”

Currently, Massachusetts health care providers are required to calculate a patient’s out of pocket cost for their medical procedures.

CHIA said the CompareCare website will allow patients to compare prices, and determine how much a specific procedure would cost through other insurance providers in the state.

The CompareCare website lists almost 300 procedures, but that number is expected to increase as CHIA collects more insurance provider data.
