Residents concerned with Baystate Health’s plan to close three mental health units

WESTFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Baystate Health plans to close three mental health units in Hampden and Franklin County.  The plan would close mental health services at Noble Hospital in Westfield, Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, and Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer.

Dozens came out to a community forum on the subject in Westfield Thursday night. Baystate Health’s plan has raised concerns among local residents, nurses and elected officials.

One nurse from Noble Hospital told 22News Massachusetts was a forerunner in creating smaller, local hospitals to better serve the community. She said Baystate’s decision is a step in the wrong direction.

“So this is a step backward,” said Sandra Lortsher. “This is a step towards big institutions again and I don’t think it’s good for our community. I don’t think it’s good for our mental health clients. “

Baystate plans to build a centralized behavioral health hospital in Holyoke.
