A state agency is working to open up the dialogue on mental health.
The Massachusetts Department of Mental Health hosted a community conversation on mental health at Springfield Technical Community College Wednesday night.
The event gave young people who may be experiencing mental health issues the opportunity to connect with local mental health providers.
It was also an opportunity for parents to learn how to better communicate with their children.
“We’re trying to get them to understand that we have developed peer groups throughout Western Mass where young people can go and they don’t even have to say their name,” Eric Brown, a board member, told 22News. “They can go and share their experiences and hopefully understand that they’re not alone.”
One in five youth between 13 and 18 have, or will have a serious mental illness in their lifetime.
