Thousands of people everywhere are making their way to the gym to begin their new year fitness resolutions.

Local gyms are helping people to begin their lifestyle change. Best Fitness in Springfield says it can be hard to commit to get fit.

Many people go to the gym for a couple weeks and then stop. Best Fitness suggests ways to achieve your goals.

“It just doesn’t happen overnight,” said Steven Mathes, fitness director. “You didn’t gain the weight overnight you’re not going to lose the weight overnight. It’s something where you have to build that rapport with yourself and with the gym so we can continue it throughout the rest of the year.”

At Club Fitness in Chicopee, employees said people were already getting a jump on their New Year’s resolutions on New Year’s Eve.

They said it was one of the busiest days at the gym they’ve seen. Club Fitness said they always have a major membership sale on Black Friday, where people purchase memberships for a full year, rather than month to month.

One gym-goer said their 2018 resolution had been to get in shape, and a year later, it’s paid off.

“Actually last year around this time that I had gotten started, and before that, I had never been fit at all,” said Michael Regish of South Hadley. “Just the difference it makes being able to get that routine started, and moving up to going here every day, just feels amazing really.”

Best Fitness also suggests keeping a food log to track how much you eat. Writing it down leads to better portion control and healthier eating.
