Cultivating marijuana is a science, and modern methods are different than the past, resulting in a stronger product.
As testing and research evolved, so have the methods for growing marijuana, meaning today’s strains can be made more potent than ever before.
Today’s marijuana is grown with a higher percentage of THC, the chemical compound that creates the “high.”
At INSA medical marijuana dispensary in Easthampton, they explained it’s the growing methods that make today’s marijuana more potent.
Ian Kelly, director of operations at INSA, said “I think for most people, THC is your most common cannabinoid that you find in cannabis, and that’s continued to increase, especially in the last ten years. As the science has gotten better on how we grow these plants, the nutrient lines that these plants are grown with have continued to increase.”
As cultivation methods improved, so, too, have testing methods. Meaning today’s marijuana is safer, and can be better developed to treat specific ailments for medical marijuana patients.
Leahanne Abrahamson, a medical marijuana patient herself, said “It has more to do with the medical side, and it really targets a lot of different areas of the body, from anxiety to pain. You know what goes in it. It’s tested, it’s safe.”
People purchasing medical, and soon recreational marijuana can see a breakdown of the levels of certain chemicals in a strain to better understand how potent it will be, before they consume it.
