HOLYOKE, Mass (WWLP) — Firefighters have put out a smoky fire in Holyoke that started around 10:30 Sunday morning.

Helicopters flew overhead as crews worked to put out a fire at the Meadow Associates factory building on North Bridge Street. One Holyoke resident saw the clouds of smoke from about a mile away, and drove down to make sure everyone was okay.

“Hopefully no one has gotten hurt. You know that’s the last thing we want to hear about. It just looks like hopefully the building sustained some damage,” said Eric Lasante of Holyoke.

22News arrived at the fire shortly after 10:30 a.m. when it started. We noticed is as time went on, the fire progressed into a thick black smoke.

According to the fire engineering website, black fires have the ability to heat up to 1,000 degrees. This fire was so hot, it actually warped some of the steel beams supporting the building.  Now, the industrial business is closed until further notice.

‘It took quite a while to actually find the fire because of the smoke condition,” said Holyoke Fire Captain Anthony Cerrutti. “It’s a very big building so you can imagine the building being filled with smoke. It was tough.”

Luckily, no one was hurt in the fire, or working in the building at the time. Captain Cerrutti told 22News he believes the fire started from a truck parked inside the complex. Now, the fire marshal is working to determine exactly how the truck caught fire. No word yet if it’s anything suspicious.
