Holyoke City Council passes resolution to free Puerto Rican Nationalist

HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Holyoke City Council meeting Tuesday night was packed with supporters of a resolution to free Puerto Rican Nationalist Oscar Lopez Rivera. Demonstrators marched to City Hall and rallied before addressing the City Council.

Rivera is serving a 70 year federal prison sentence for conspiracy against the government. City Councilor Nelson Roman said Lopez is hailed as the Nelson Mandela of Puerto Ricans, and filed a resolution to ask the president to free him.

“What this resolution does is ask President Barack Obama to pardon and free Oscar Lopez who is a U.S. political prisoner, who’s calling for the freedom and liberty of Puerto Rico,” said Roman.

The resolution passed unanimously. Holyoke has one of the largest Puerto Rican population’s per-capita in the United States.
