Homeless no longer allowed to camp on Greenfield Town Common

Monday is the last day that homeless people staying on the Greenfield Town Common will be allowed to camp there.

Homeless people have been allowed to camp on the Greenfield Town Common all summer due to an exemption in a city ordinance.

The common is the only city-owned property that allows people to camp overnight. The Greenfield Board of Health, however, determined that the homeless encampment on the common is temporary housing, and requires special permits.

The Board of Health set Monday, August 20, as the deadline for the campers to leave the common.

The Greenfield Recorder is reporting that because the board of health’s order to vacate that property is a civil matter, not a criminal one, Greenfield police likely won’t be getting involved if campers refuse to leave.

The city said it wants to open temporary housing at a former group home on High Street, but that would require state funding.
