Basketball and business were the topics of discussion at American International College Monday morning.
Youth from the area gathered in the college’s gymnasium for the third annual Hoop Up Springfield Job Fair and Basketball Tournament.
The event is sponsored by Hampden District Attorney Anthony Gulluni. It gives young people something fun to do during their April vacation and the chance to learn about summer employment opportunities.
“Most of them, if not all of them, will walk away with at least an opportunity to interview going forward and then probably a job in the summer,” DA Gulluni explained. “Fundamentally, for us in terms of public safety, giving these kids an opportunity to see what it’s like to work five days a week and get a good paycheck at the end of the week, I think will inspire them.”
The DA’s sentiment was shared by Tyrek Rankin.
“Having the chance to come in, dress up, get a free suit and then go to a job fair, potentially get a job and have fun, it was a good experience for us,” Rankin told 22News.
Young men at the event were provided with suits through Suit Up Springfield and also learned job interviewing skills.
