A house on Birnie Avenue in West Springfield was demolished Friday.
Mayor Will Reichelt posted on his Facebook page about the demolition.
The building commissioner said on the Facebook post that the town received complaints about the house. He said it was poorly maintained and deteriorated, and hoarders allegedly lived in the home. He also said it was rodent infested and the house received years of neglect.
The city demolished the home Friday morning and Mayor Reichelt said four new homes will be built on the property.
“That’s what started, we were starting to see after the recession was that kind of broken window theory starting to play out,” said Mayor Reichelt. “It brings down value to the property.”
Mayor Reichelt told 22News, the number of problem homes in West Springfield has declined sharply since he was elected in 2015.
