The heat and humidity kept people and their pets out of the parks in western Massachusetts.

Temperatures were in the 90’s Monday, but the humidity made it feel so much hotter. But 22News did find some determined basketball players at Van Horn Park in Springfield.

“Drink a lot of water, Gatorade, anything, to just stay hydrated,” said Jonathan Deleon.

Edgardo Colon advised, “Bring some water in your bag as much water, as much as you can. And just stay hydrated to be honest.”

And that’s the advice from Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Baystate urges athletes to drink plenty of water and take breaks in the shade when it’s this hot. They also recommend wearing a hat and light-colored clothing.

Baystate Medical Center also advises you to eat smaller meals, and avoiding high-protein foods will help keep you cooler.
