300 Springfield teenagers are about to embark in a major experience in their lives, their first summer job.
Springfield state representative Carlos Gonzalez had good reason to welcome the teens to the New England Farm Workers Council’s, Youth Works summer program.
The program provided Gonzalez with his first summer job when he was sixteen.
“I got the opportunity at a summer program working at the mayor’s office and working at the mayor’s office was a great opportunity to lean how government really impacts our lives,” said Gonzalez.
“I had a summer job, tobacco, so summer jobs give you a new perspective, and everybody has to work,” said executive director of the New England Farm Workers Council Heriberto Flores.
The three hundred teenagers will work in public, private and commercial facilities next week for the summer. They’ve been selected from four thousand applicants.
