Hungry Hill Senior Center hosts “Shin Dig” for St. Patrick’s Day

News

Thousands of Irish immigrants re-settled in the Hungry Hill neighborhood of Springfield more than 100 years ago. And Irish traditions live on at Springfield’s Hungry Hill Senior Center.

Irish dancing was a highlight at Friday’s “Shin Dig on the Hill.” Dozens of neighborhood residents shared their enthusiasm for their Irish heritage.

Hungry Hill resident Michael Shea is a relative newcomer, having emigrated to Springfield from Ireland in 1956. “It’s nice to keep it alive,” Shea told 22News, “keep everything going, the way it was then.”

True to their Irish heritage, these men and women who grew up in Hungry Hill celebrate with music and dancing dating back centuries.

It’s an appropriate start to the St. Patrick’s Day weekend.
