Immigrant rights advocates gathered in Springfield in support of a man who has been detained.
Eduardo Samaniego is a local advocate and undocumented immigrant who has been detained for nearly three months in Georgia. Samaniego was visiting family and allegedly forgot his phone and wallet in a taxi which they say led to his detention.
He’s been a leader with the Pioneer Valley Workers Center in western Massachusetts for the last three years and has made many appearances on 22News.
Advocates told 22News they’re thankful for the support they’ve received.
“We’re really grateful to Rep. McGovern, and senators Markey and Warren. They all personally know Eduardo. They are fighting for him. They are leaders in calling for a more just immigration system.”
Samaniego is a graduate of Hampshire College in Amherst and has been a leader in uniting students to advocate for the DREAM Act.
His friends and family told 22News they worry he’s not getting the care he needs and say the facility he’s at is currently under investigation.
