Drivers on Route 9 in Hadley should expect delays over the next several months.
Construction began on Monday to replace two existing crosswalks with a high-intensity activated crosswalk in front of the Most Holy Redeemer Church and the Phillips 66 gas station.
The $200,000 project includes adding new signage which will light up when a pedestrian is ready to cross. The road is being reduced to one lane in each direction.
Although, construction is scheduled to take several months, nearby business owners aren’t concerned about it affecting business.
“There is really no reason for it because the delays are a minute or two at the most,” Michael Krause said. “It’s just a short traffic delay.”
The project was supposed to start last fall, but bad weather delayed construction. MassDOT expects it to be completed in August.
