InFocus: May is mental health awareness month

News

May is Mental Health Awareness Month.

Every day, over 40-million Americans are living with a mental illness in various forms. According to U-S government statistics, half of all mental disorders begin by age 14 and three-quarters by age 24, and only 41 percent of the people who had a mental disorder in the past year received professional health care or other services.

Mental health and substance abuse can take many forms. There’s depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, addiction, and developmental disabilities. Each of these illnesses has its own symptoms and some are more visible and recognizable than others.

This week on 22News InFocus we’ll be discussing how to recognize signs of mental illness in yourself and others and find the help you need.
