InFocus: Property owners dealing with the impact of crumbling concrete foundations

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP)– The 22News I-TEAM has been following a story for several years now that has affected hundreds of homeowners in Connecticut and is now impacting many here in western and central Massachusetts.

Crumbling foundations have been found in homes in more than a dozen communities in Massachusetts, from Longmeadow to Rutland. The cause: pyrrhotite, a mineral found naturally in some quarries where the concrete aggregate is made, and it’s been used in the concrete foundations of homes in the area for decades.

This week we have a investigative special edition of 22News InFocus. I-Team reporter Taylor Knight will be providing in-depth coverage of this issue, talking with homeowners, inspectors, realtors and lawmakers about the economic and personal toll this damage is causing to homeowners and communities.

Watch 22News InFocus Sunday at noon. You can also find the complete program on our website.
