CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – It’s all about sweets on Fat Tuesday, and of course western Massachusetts residents are filling up on some packzi!
Paczki are a Polish pastry filled with fruit or cream cheese. Paczki Day is traditionally observed the day before Ash Wednesday. In Poland, however, paczki sales are the highest on Fat Thursday, which is the Thursday before Ash Wednesday.
Calories do not count on #PaczkiDay! In fact, one customer at Bob’s Bakery in #Chicopee told me they have ZERO calories! 🤫 #FatTuesday pic.twitter.com/1AvsLJSanT— Monica Ricci (@MonicaWWLP) March 5, 2019
One customer told 22News he goes to Bob’s Bakery in Chicopee every Fat Tuesday.
“I came to get some of their famous packzi! My wife loves them too,” said Jim Haughey, of Chicopee. “And because Lent is coming, today is the day you get the packzi and then you give them up for the rest of the month.”
Dave Miller and Robin Clinton also made sure to stop by the Polish bakery this Fat Tuesday, and described the tasty pastry for whoever has not tried one:
“Heaven!,” Clinton said. “Take a donut and notch it up about 12 points!,” Miller added.
It’s indeed the best day of the year!— Nate Moreau (@nathan_moreau) March 5, 2019
Bob’s Bakery had a steady flow of customers all day long. Co-owner Dorothy Czajka told 22News they even had to work extra hours to prepare for the rush.
“My husband came in 9:00 p.m. yesterday [Monday] evening, and he worked the whole night,” Czajka explained.
The bakery has been in business for more than 50 years and offers more than ten flavors of paczki, including the traditional flavors of rose jam and prune.
