(CNN) – Strong words from President Obama following a controversial turnaround by Israel’s prime minister this week.
In an interview with the Huffington Post, Obama said the US will likely need to look into different options available when it comes to a possible two-state solution with Palestinians.
His comments come after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said there would not be a Palestinian state as long as he is Prime Minister.
Netanyahu made the remarks in the closing days of his campaign, but later walked back his stance after winning reelection.
Senator John McCain is among several republicans criticizing the president for his reaction to the situation.
“There was a free and fair democratic election. The only nation in the region that would have such a thing. The president should get over it. Get over your temper tantrum, Mr. President. It’s time that we work together with our Israeli friends and try to stem this tide of ISIS and Iranian movement throughout the region, which is threatening the very fabric of the region. The least of your problems is what Bibi Netanyahu said during an election campaign.”
Netanyahu has said in at least three post-election interviews that he still believes in Palestinian statehood, despite his pre-election flip-flop on the issue.
