HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – A leading Latina scholar spoke at Holyoke community college Wednesday afternoon.

Social justice advocate and author Sonia Nieto gave a talk this afternoon about the role of education for Latina’s in western Massachusetts.

Nieto told 22news, as the number of Latino students continues to rise in western Massachusetts, It’s important to discuss issues in education for these students.

Sonia Nieto said, “Teachers, Professors, all need to knock something about the Latino community in order to be effective with those students and to even get them here to Holyoke Community College and to other institutions of higher education.”

Sonia Nieto, A Umass alumna, has received numerous awards for her work for the Hispanic community, including six honorary doctorates.
