SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Local emergency healthcare agencies are holding an awareness event and giveaway today to celebrate Public Health Month and Telecommunications Week.

American Medical Response, Baystate Health, the Department of Health and Human Services, and Springfield Emergency Communications will host the event at 595 Cottage street from one to three Tuesday afternoon.

AMR will be giving away the “File of Life”, a small magnetic pouch to store your medical information, which can be hugely helpful for emergency responders, and will be demonstrating hands-only CPR.

Patrick Leonardo, Operations Manager of American Medical Response said, “One of the easiest ways to save lives is through hands-only CPR. You don’t get certified but if someone were to go down in public what you can do immediately to save their life. If we can get the public to help us and our first responders before we get there, the chances of survival increase dramatically.”

Springfield Emergency Communications will demonstrate the timeline of a 911 call and how dispatch centers work.

Blood donations are still in critical need. Baystate Health Blood Donor Clinic is helping to set up appointments for blood donations at Baystate Medical Center.
