Twelve Springfield Police officers, one retired officer and one former officer have been indicted in connection with an alleged assault outside bar that took place in 2015.  The owner of the bar and the bar’s manager have also been charged.

Attorney General Maura Healey’s office announced the indictments and charges Wednesday afternoon. According to her office, a specially-designated Statewide Grand Jury sitting in Worcester returned indictments Wednesday.

Six police officers and Nathan Bill’s Bar & Restaurant owner were indicted on charges of:

• Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon
• Shod Foot (4 counts each)
• Assault and Battery
• Serious Bodily Injury (1 count each)
• Assault and Battery (3 counts each)
• Conspiracy (1 count each)

Springfield Police Officers charged are:

1. Springfield Police Officer Daniel Billingsley, age 30, of Springfield
2. Springfield Police Officer Anthony Cicero, age 29, of Hampden
3. Springfield Police Officer Christian Cicero, age 28, of Longmeadow
4. Springfield Police Officer Igor Basovskiy, age 34, of Springfield
5. Springfield Police Officer Jameson Williams, age 33, of East Longmeadow
6. Springfield Police Officer Jose Diaz, 54, of Springfield

• Nathan Bills Bar & Restaurant Owner John Sullivan, age 34, of Springfield 

The Grand Jury also indicted eight additional Springfield police officers and one former officer in connection with attempting to cover up details of the assault afterward:

In addition to the officers, bar owner John Sullivan and bar manager, Joseph Sullivan, were also indicted on charges.

The Attorney General’s Office alleges that on April 8, 2015, off-duty officers Billingsley, Anthony and Christian Cicero, Basovskiy, Williams, and Diaz and bar owner John Sullivan, assaulted four victims after a confrontation at Nathan Bill’s Bar & Restaurant in Springfield. The alleged fight took place down the street from the bar. Healey said victims sustained significant injuries.

Healey’s Office also alleges that after the assault, nine Springfield Police Officers, bar owner John Sullivan, and bar manager Joseph Sullivan took part in an ongoing cover-up of the assault. 

All defendants will be arraigned in Hampden and/or Worcester Superior Courts at a later time.

Acting Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood told 22News the twelve indicted officers are suspended without pay. Springfield Police Sergeant Louis Bortolussi has since retired.  Former Springfield Police Officer Nathaniel Perez is now a Massachusetts State Police Trooper.  State Police Spokesman David Procopio told 22News Perez was relieved of duty Wednesday and an internal hearing is scheduled for Friday to determine his duty status going forward.
