Public transportation hubs in Springfield will be receiving some much needed upgrades.

Last week, the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority was awarded part of a $1.3M “quick action” grant from AARP.

They’ll use this money to install at least 10 benches at key transit stops around the city. PVTA said a lack of benches has been cited as a key area of concern over the years.

It’s especially problematic for seniors and people with disabilities who need a place to rest while waiting for buses.

Jennifer Duchane said told 22News this is long overdue, “Especially in the city of Springfield with the casino coming in and some of the bigger businesses there’s an increase of bus travelers including the elderly and disabled so the benches are really helpful.”

PVTA hasn’t set a date, but said they plan to complete this project as soon as possible.
