Greenfield Police Department launched comfort dog program

GREENFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - The Greenfield Police Department launched their comfort dog program Thursday.

This comfort dog program is truly one of a kind. Greenfield Police said there will be a St. Bernard to help comfort people who are victims of crime and dealing with stressful situations.

The Greenfield Police Department's new comfort dog program will be led by Clarence and Donut.

Clarence is the larger and much older St. Bernard. Donut is just a nine week old puppy.

Greenfield Police said they started the program last week after they purchased Donut from a breeder in New York.

They said the St. Bernard's calm nature helps people with their anxiety.

"The dogs are going to be able to help us calm people down so we can refocus their energies on helping them recover from their tragedy," said Greenfield Lt. William Gordon.

Lt. Gordon told 22News Donut will take over as the main comfort dog next year after Clarence trains him.

Clarence has helped comfort the victims of crime all over the country including those at the Sandy Hook School shooting.

Lt. Gordon said only a few police departments in the country have a comfort dog program like this.
