Greenfield to assist homeless people sleeping on Town Common find better place

Franklin County

The Greenfield Town Common has become a campground for the city’s homeless population.

ServiceNet said their Wells Street shelter is full and there are few options for affordable housing in Franklin County.

“They don’t have those options to go and get that housing, or they have to go through tremendous steps to get their foot in the door,” said Lucas Longo of Greenfield.

The Greenfield Town Common is the only city property where its legal for homeless people to camp overnight. A city ordinance restricts people in Greenfield from staying on public lands between 10 at night and 6 in the morning, with the exception of Town Common. The city is working with social service agencies to come up with a sustainable solution for the campers on Town Common.

Greenfield Mayor William Martin told 22News the Town Common homelessness situation is not a public health emergency, but many city departments are working on this issue. Mayor Martin said the city doesn’t have the money or resources to fund additional shelters.

Mayor Martin said he’s asked social service agencies to hold a “resource fair” on Town Common to discuss their services with the homeless people.
