Hawley Select Board okays Mohawk Trail Regional H.S. logo change

The Hawley Select Board has expressed its official opinion on the Mohawk’s mascot controversy.

The Select Board said that they’re fine with transitioning away from Native American imagery and using the letter “M” to denote the Mohawks. But they would “strongly object to removing or altering the existing painting, which was given to the school by the Class of 1978.”

Mohawk Trail Regional High School Co-Principal Marisa Mendonsa told 22News that, while it is important for the School Committee and the Local Education Council to hear from the broader school community, the LEC will be recommending a course of action to the School Committee.

Mendonsa said she’s confident that the School Community will find the right way to move forward in this debate.

The LEC will meet again on April 1, at 6 p.m. at Mohawk Trail Regional High School to talk about the school’s mascot.
