MassDOT building crosswalk to help 81-year-old blind man from South Deerfield

Franklin County

MassDOT has come to the aid of an elderly, disabled veteran from Franklin County.

Eighty-one-year-old William Lankarte of South Deerfield is legally blind and needs a walker to get around. He’s forced to walk a quarter of a mile to cross busy Sugarloaf street just to get to the post office.

Four months after his request, MassDOT has started building the crosswalk in front of the post office.

“I’m overwhelmed, I’m so happy I didn’t think that this could happen,” said William Lankarte of South Deerfield. “It did, I’m very pleased with the help I got for it.”

Once it stops raining MassDOT is expected to complete its crosswalk project. This will enable a safer crossing for the 81-year-old and others who require the convenience.
