MassDOT crews to begin work on Green Bridge in Montague

Franklin County

Franklin County drivers will soon have to find another way into Greenfield and Turners Falls.

The Green Bridge, also known as the Fifth Street Bridge, is on Turners Falls Road and goes over the power canal in Montague.

Massachusetts Department of Transportation crews will be replacing the bridge deck starting Monday morning, September 17, the same week the power canal will be drawn down.

Montague Town Administrator Steve Ellis told 22News that they’ve been receiving a lot of complaints from drivers about the Green Bridge.

“I’ve never had a damaged vehicle,” Leverett resident Jessica Howard said. “But it’s always one of those things that you know needs to be fixed, for sure.”

Drivers will have to take the Gill-Montague Bridge or the General Pierce Bridge to get into Montague or Greenfield while the work on the Green Bridge is being done.

MassDOT said the Green Bridge repairs are expected to take several weeks.
