Montague Police K-9 Sunny retiring after 8 years of service

Franklin County

A Montague Police Dog is retiring after eight years of service.

Montague town officials will pay tribute to K-9 Sunny Monday night for all the work he’s done for the Montague Police Department

K-9 Sunny is a 9-year-old German Shepard, and was a member of the Montague Police Department for 8 years.  His handler John Dempsey said K-9 Sunny suffered a shoulder injury and has been slowing down over the years.

K-9 Sunny has helped find missing people, illegal drugs, and criminal evidence that have led to arrests.

“It makes our job easier,” said John Dempsey, Acting Police Sergeant & Former K-9 Handler, Montague Police Department. “If we had to go through the woods and find somebody it would take six to seven police officers.”

Dempsey told 22News K-9 Artie will continue as the primary police dog for the Montague Police Department, and they will not replace K-9 Sunny.

K-9 Sunny was 1-year-old when he began working for the department.

Dempsey said he will take K-9 Sunny as his pet on a retirement vacation at Orchard Beach in September.
