TURNERS FALLS, Mass. (WWLP) – A woman died after a fire in Millers Falls late Tuesday afternoon.
Several people escaped but a 66-year-old woman was reported missing after a house fire on 20 Bridge Street at around 4:45 p.m., according to the Department of Fire Services. That victim’s body was later located inside the home. Her name has not been released. The building collapsed in the fire, which was described as “catastrophic” by the Fire Marshall’s Office.
“On behalf of the Turners Falls Fire Department, I want to express our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones,” said Turners Falls Fire Chief Todd Brunelle. “This is a tragedy for them and for our community.”
A GoFundMe has been created to assist the family affected by the house fire.
Bridge Street was reopened at around 3 a.m. according to Turners Falls Fire Department.
“As investigators continue their work, we want to remind everyone that working smoke alarms and practiced home escape plans are vital fire safety tools,” said State Fire Marshal Ostroskey. “Please be sure you have working smoke alarms on every level of your home and an escape plan that accounts for everyone’s needs and abilities.”

About half a dozen area fire departments assisted with the fire. The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Turners Falls Fire Department, Montague Police, and State Police assigned to the State Fire Marshal’s office and Northwestern District Attorney’s office.
