Residents allowed back in homes after gas leak in South Deerfield

Franklin County

Residents living around Thayer Street in South Deerfield had to be evacuated from their homes as a precaution, following a gas leak Thursday morning.

Chris Farrell, spokesperson for Berkshire Gas, told 22News that a paving contractor working on Thayer Street hit a Berkshire Gas “gate box,” causing the leak. Evacuations were ordered as a precaution, though Farrell did not know the exact number of people affected.

By 8:35 a.m., Deerfield police said the street was reopened and all residents were allowed back in their homes.
