22News held a Shredding and Food donation event at the Eastern States Exposition this past weekend.

A truck dropped off the donated food at the Open Pantry on Main Street in Springfield Monday morning.

The Food Pantry received more than 3,000 pounds of food and more than $800 from our Shredding and Food donation event this past Saturday.

22News hosts Free Community Shredding Event to help local food pantry

Annie Rennix, director of Food Pantry Services spoke with 22News on how these donations will help struggling families to feed their children this summer.

“They’re missing out on the breakfast and lunch they get at school and sometimes they go home and they might be hungry and not have that supplemental food. And that’s where we come in,” Rennix said.

The Food Pantry said they will sort the food and then put the items into boxes to distribute to the families who visit the pantry.

Rennix said pasta, soup, and baked goods were among the most- donated items from our food drive.

Thirty-four thousand pounds of paper was also shredded at the event Saturday.
