The Red Cross and 22News teamed up to hold a blood donation drive at the 22News studios in Chicopee Thursday. One hundred and four donors registered, and all but a very few ended up giving blood.
The Red Cross called it their most successful blood drive of the New Year.
Ameila Parker, donor recruitment associate for American Red Cross told 22News, “We are very excited and thrilled and thankful for the people that helped us out at WWLP. You made a big difference.”
The blood drive collected a total of 99 units of blood. Eighty-five pints of whole blood and 14 units of Power Red Cells, enough to save 269 lives.
Parker said, “So the Red Cross gives out blood where it needs to be however it mostly stays in this area because we have so many hospitals concentrated in this area.”
Almost all blood donated Thursday will likely benefit hundreds of western Massachusetts residents.
22News’ next blood drive, our annual “super drive,” takes place on July 17.
There are more opportunities to donate.
