3 people taken to hospital after train, car crashed on Route 32 in Monson

Hampden County

Three people were taken to the hospital after a train hit an SUV at a railroad crossing in Monson Tuesday afternoon.

Monson police posted on the department’s Facebook page that their investigation indicated that a vehicle carrying three senior-aged occupants was traveling north on Stafford Rd.

Witnesses told police the railroad crossing lights were activated as the vehicle approached but it did not stop until it was partially across the rails.

Moments later, police say a southbound New England Central Railroad train struck the vehicle.

Monson Fire Ambulance took all occupants to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with injuries that appear to be non-life threatening.

The West Stafford Fire Department and the Stafford Police Department assisted.
