Multiple law enforcement agencies are looking into what caused a deadly accident where a car ended up submerged in Heritage Park Pond in East Longmeadow early Tuesday morning.
According to a news release from the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, a 32-year-old man from East Longmeadow died from his injuries in the crash.
Police received a 911 call just before 3:00 A.M. about a car that had crashed into the pond. According to the DA’s office, police and firefighters discovered the vehicle was partially submerged in the water, about 30 to 40 feet from shore.
Firefighters were able to swim out to the car, where they found the 32-year-old man, who was unresponsive. The man was taken to Baystate Medical Center, where he died.
“I’m devastated for them [his family],” said Kelly Magnani of East Longmeadow. “I can’t imagine. I just don’t understand, he had to have flipped over or something, or maybe there was a medical emergency who knows? But it’s horrible. Absolutely horrible”
Fearing that there could be more people who had been inside the car, the State Police Dive Team was called in to locate possible other victims, though none were found.
The man’s name is not being released at this time.
East Longmeadow Police, the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are all investigating the case.
