AGAWAM, Mass. (WWLP) – Recognition Saturday for local leaders that have made a strong impact in their community.

Martin Luther King Jr. Family Services hosted their third annual “Social Justice Awards” ceremony in Agawam Saturday morning.

Hundreds packed the Chez Josef to show their support and celebrate the accomplishments of outstanding individuals in western Massachusetts.

22News spoke with former state representative and civil rights leader Benjamin Swan who won the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award.

Swan told 22News, “I tried to do the best I could for my community, whatever community that was wherever I lived. I’ve tried to be an advocate for people who sometimes didn’t advocate for themselves.”

Former 22News anchor Kathryn Kirby received a “Changemaker” award during Saturday’s ceremony.

The organization decided to add the category this year to recognize leaders making a difference.
