5-week swimming program to benefit individuals with disabilities

Hampden County

CHD Disability Resources and Western New England University’s Doctor of Occupational Therapy program have partnered up to get people swimming.

Aquability is an adaptive swim program for individuals with a wide range of disabilities.

The five-week program is open to kids and adults and isn’t geared towards one specific disability.

For an hour every week, student instructors are paired with participants in order to teach them sensory-motor strategies.

CHD Disability Resources Program Manager, Jessica Levine spoke with 22News about the partnership with Western New England University.

“The partnership came about because I was looking for a great program to work with and the occupational therapy program, it was perfect,” Levine said. “We wanted a one-to-one instructor with students and the OT students were perfect for that.”

The Aquability swim program will run every year in the fall and spring seasons.
