After 50 years, Richard W. Childs Trail Races could be coming to end

Hampden County

For the past 50 years, the Richard W. Childs Trail Races have been held weekly in Springfield for a portion of the Summer.

This year’s races began on June 5 and continued every Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. The races are for kids 15 and younger and the fee is just a $1.50 per week.

Raffles were held, along with the giveaway of trophies and medals for winners in each age group.

Head of the foundation Dennis Childs told 22News why his father started these races 50 years ago.

“We always went to the Boston area to run races, there weren’t many local races around here and my father thought of it ‘why don’t we put on a kid’s race?'” Childs said.

This year was supposed to be the last year the races are held but Childs told 22News he might be back again in 2019.
