FEEDING HILLS, Mass. (WWLP) – Agawam firefighters were called to Springfield Street for a reported house fire Thursday night.
Agawam Fire Chief Alan Sirois said the department received a report of a fire on Springfield Street around 9:30 p.m. Thursday night. When crews arrived to the home, flames could be seen coming from the first and second floor.
Due to the steady winds and heavy flames, firefighters from Westfield and Longmeadow were called in to assist, with station coverage from West Springfield. Firefighters were able to put out a majority of the fire within 15 minutes but spent several hours after to check the building for any other smaller fires in the home.
One woman was inside the home at the time of the fire and safely escaped thanks to smoke detectors alerting her.
“This incident serves as another example of how the presence of functioning smoke detectors play an invaluable role in surviving a fire.” said Chief Sirois. “If smoke detectors were not present in this home the incident could have proven to be much more tragic.”
The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Agawam Fire and Police Departments, as well as the State Fire Marshal’s Office. The fire is currently not considered suspicious.
