Amtrak: Crossing train tracks is illegal and you could be fined $100

Hampden County

People in Springfield’s North End are still crossing the train tracks illegally, just two days after a woman was struck and killed there.

22News saw multiple people crossing the tracks back and forth from Plainfield Street to Birnie Avenue.

Amtrak is warning people that it’s both dangerous and illegal to cross the tracks anywhere but at a designated crossing.

There are designated crossings at Wason Avenue and at the Route 20 bridge. But, one man said while he knows it’s illegal, it’s the most convenient route for him to take.

“It’s the easy way to come through,” said the local resident. “You can cut. Because you got to go all the way around, so I just take a shortcut.”

Amtrak said people who cross the tracks illegally are trespassing and face a possible fine of up to $100.
