Annual Kids Safety Expo held in Springfield

Hampden County

An estimated 800,000 children are reported missing each year in the United States. That”s according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Parents in Springfield took precautions to protect their children from being abducted.

The 10th Annual Kids Safety Expo was held Saturday morning at the Basketball Hall of Fame. The expo allows kids to have fun while learning safety techniques.

The event is free and includes demonstrations such as bike safety, stranger danger information, and a police dog presentation.

“We take photographs of the children, fingerprints, cheek swabs, dental impressions and everything is put on a CD and given to the parents in case they ever need it, and then they distribute it to the local police if necessary,” said Jay Papianou. “We hope they never have to use it.”

MyChip was one of the sponsors of Saturday’s event. The program provides tools to help law enforcement find and identify a lost or missing child.
