More than 220,000 people are struggling with food insecurity in western Massachusetts, and Thanksgiving is just days away.
That’s why a group is walking 43 miles over two day, pushing shopping carts from Springfield to Greenfield to fight hunger throughout the Pioneer Valley.
Since 2010 93.9 the River’s Monte Belmonte has been leading his annual march to raise funds supporting the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, raising more than $880,000.
One of the groups stops Monday morning was in Chicopee at Lorraine’s Soup Kitchen.
“The food bank can take each dollar donated and and turn it into three meals and then the 200 or so emergency food providers that they work with can get that food free or severely discounted and bring it to the communities,” said Monte Belmonte.
For the entirety of the walk Belmonte will also broadcast on the air, and he’ll also be joined by Executive Director of the Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, and Congressman Jim McGovern on this journey to Franklin County.
“Hunger is a year round problem. And people shouldn’t just step up during the holidays, but all year round,” said Congressman Jim McGovern. “In Washington we need to step up and do more to try and end hunger but locally here we can support the food bank of western Massachusetts.”
Belmonte told 22News he’s hopeful they’ll raise enough money this year to surpass one million dollars in total. All proceeds will go directly to the Food Bank.
