One person had to be taken to the hospital, after someone set a trash-filled shopping carriage on fire inside a downtown Springfield apartment building.

Dennis Leger, aide to the Springfield fire commissioner, told 22News that firefighters were called to the 12th floor of 10 Chestnut Street (Chestnut Towers) shortly after 11:00 Wednesday night. Residents living on that floor had to be evacuated because of the smoke coming from a shopping cart filled with trash, which was burning up against a wall in the hallway.

Leger said that the fire did not cause much damage, but one person did suffer a back injury and was taken to the hospital. He said that the fire had been intentionally set, and if anyone has any information, they are asked to call the Springfield Arson Squad at (413) 787-6403.
