Are trees around your house safe? Check before it’s too late

Hampden County

Several strong storms in western Massachusetts over the past week have brought down trees throughout the region.

Take a look at this one that snapped and came down on South Park Avenue in Longmeadow Thursday night. And just a couple days ago a tree came down on top of a mustang on Wexford Street in Springfield.

“With the amount of rain we have, your roots get saturated,” said David Murphy, Western Mass Tree Care. “From the looks of it there’s some fungus growing at the base of this tree which is a sign that there’s some fungus going on the ground. The way this tree broke off you can see there’s some fungus on the ground, there was defiantly a water issue.”

Murphy told 22News the best way to prevent this happening to you, is to have your trees inspected by an arborist.

Leaning trees, cavities and decay are all signs you should have a tree inspected.
