Ashgrove Street residents complain of blighted building in Chicopee

Hampden County

22News is working for you following up on an email through our Report it feature, that called attention to a blighted building in Chicopee.

Exposed wires, trash, even sharp blades, clutter an abandoned home on Ashgrove Street in Chicopee. Looking at the residential neighborhood, you wouldn’t expect to see this blighted building.

Simone Thibodeau moved in to her home next to the building eight months ago. She has been in contact with the city, who assured her it would be taken down.

This is the view that Simone has of the building from her back deck. You can see half of the roof is missing from the building. She told 22News that city officials say the building is condemned but the owner doesn’t want to take it down.

“It’s obviously not structurally sound or safe,” said Thibodeau.

Another woman living near the building told 22News that it was once a beautiful apartment building.

Simone says the city’s next step is to take the owner of the property to court because he says the building is structurally sound and doesn’t need to come down.

“It’s almost summertime and the kids are going to be out and we’re just worried about local safety,” Thibodeau added.

Simone says many kids live in the neighborhood including five right next door and worries that they may get hurt while playing near the building.
