A fundraiser was held Saturday night in Westfield to support a man who’s wife unexpectedly died almost two months ago.
Southampton residents JiSun and Sean Poirier’s first child was born on February 13th 2018. But shortly after the new mother held her 7-pound, 1-ounce daughter, JiSun lost her life due to complications with birth. She was just 34 years old.
Sean is a veteran who served in Iraq. When Sean’s friends at the 104th Fighter Wing at The Barnes Air National Guard Base in Westfield heard the family’s story, they wanted to help by holding a hockey game fundraiser at Amelia Park Ice Arena.
The matchup featured, the base’s hockey team the “Barnstormers” and the Springfield Thunderbirds charity team.
One family friend told 22News she was grateful that hundreds came out to support the Poirier family.
“Talking to Sean talking to his family, talking to his wife Ji’s family, they are overwhelmed by the support coming out,” said Mary Miller. “This hockey game today was more than a fantastic turnout.”
The fundraiser also featured a 50/50 raffle with all proceeds going to the Poirier family.
One family member said the last few months have been tough, but Saturday night was a step in the right direction.
“Very thankful for Barnes doing this for him and his daughter,” Lisa Geronimo added. “It’s been a hard road for him so far, the family is very thankful, very thankful.”
Sean will be using the $6,000 that were raised Saturday night, to pay for the family’s medical bills and his daughter Anna’s college fund.
